My group for operations management started our research for our final project! We are researching and writing a final report on the operations processes for the international chain Metro. There are five of us in the group: three Chinese students (Nina, Janry and TV), one German (Sebastian) and myself.
All five of us took the public bus to the nearest Metro store to collect as much data and information as possible. Upon arriving at the store, we met with the general manager (Manager Yu) who was a huge help! He gave us a very detailed tour of the store, answered questions we had prepared in advance, told us about their quality control and inventory processes and explained the store layout and design. He only spoke Chinese, so while the three Chinese students and I interviewed Manager Yu, Sebastian was in charge of videotaping. Before leaving, we made sure to purchase some products (I bought chick peas and soy milk) so that we could get firsthand experience being a Metro customer to help us get a sense of their customer service.
After our trip to Metro, the five of us walked over to the nearby IKEA. We enjoyed some lunch at the IKEA restaurant and took a walk through the store, comparing IKEA's layout and marketing to that of Metro.
Overall, it was a very productive trip. Our team worked well together and delegated tasks beforehand to evenly distribute the workload. I am looking forward to compiling all of our findings to write the final report. Let me know if you want a copy when we are finished!
